Sitges Malvasia Tasting (sweet wine)

In the late 18th century, with the opening of free trade decreed by King Charles III, thousands of young people from Garraf left for the Spanish colonies of the Philippines, Cuba, and Puerto Rico with the dream of making their fortune.
Those who succeeded in that overseas adventure opened their own businesses, and some even managed to create true commercial empires. When the Cuban War broke out, the return of these ‘americanos’ gave rise to a new Sitges bourgeoisie. They beautified the town with their ostentatious houses and boosted prosperity, transforming Sitges into a modern town, open to the future, leaving their mark everywhere.

In Sitges, there are about sixty Americanos’ houses, located in different neighborhoods. One of the most prominent is the Eixample district, with most of its Modernist buildings, and another, the streets leading down to the beach, where we find elegant Neoclassical houses.

Along the Americanos’ Houses Route, we will stop in front of some of these architectural gems to learn their history: who the owners were, what they did, and how they transformed Sitges upon their return.

Among the most notable examples are Casa Manuel Planes, Villa Avelina, and Casa Sebastià Sans, many of which are now charming hotels. We will discover fascinating lives full of anecdotes that will surprise you.
