Historic-Artistic Site 1972
The tour of Sitges’ old town will reveal the origins of the village, its Iberian and Roman remains, the old fishermen’s quarter, and the church of Saint Bartholomew and Saint Thecla.
The old town was declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1972, and it is here that you will find the so-called Iberian settlement of Puig de Sitges.
You can see ancient grain silos carved into the rock, with Iberian archaeological remains increasing year after year. The Roman occupation also left its mark, as did the medieval settlers who, in the 10th century, returned to inhabit this place.
During the visit to Sitges’ old town, we will also see:
- The old fishing quarter, currently known as Racó de la Calma, with its white houses and the blue line painted at the base.
- We will see where the old fishing port was located, where two moorings are still preserved on the wall.
- We will locate the remains of the medieval castle, scattered throughout different buildings in Sitges.
- We will see the old modernist market of Sitges.
- The old 14th-century entrance tower to Sitges and emblematic buildings and monuments through which we can explain the history of the town of Sitges – Cau Ferrat Museum, Maricel Museum, and Maricel Palace.
